Adolescent & Youth Services
Adolescent & Youth Substance
Abuse Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
Services
Our current Intensive Adolescent Program includes a
Monday night Intensive Outpatient group,
Wednesday night Family & Youth/Multi-Family
treatment group and a Thursday mixed age treatment group. The
Wednesday group includes both the identified substance user and his/her
family, usually parents or guardians, in a multifamily group therapy session.
The Monday and Thursday night groups are the substance user without the family. Both
groups will focus on substance abuse and related issues. The
adolescent/youth participants will typically be under 21 years old.
Our Approach…
When treating adolescent clients, including the family is especially important. Drug and alcohol use does
not just affect the person using, but also the entire family. Here at First Step we provide several ways for families to become involved in treatment.
Our FACE (Family and Community
Education) program is a free service
for those concerned about the substance use of
loved ones, or for anyone who is interested in
learning about how alcohol and drug use affects
individuals, families, and the community.
Though FACE is facilitated
by professional counselors, it is not a
counseling or a support group. It is designed
for families, friends, teachers, counselors,
attorneys, other professionals, etc. and is not
appropriate for the alcohol or drug abuser. For
information, call First Step in Raleigh at:

Our multi-family groups
provide an opportunity for parents to join their
child in an education and
discussion group. These groups have been shown
to help encourage a dialogue between parent and
child about substance use and other risky
behaviors.
Substance abuse treatment groups provide an
opportunity to gain support and awareness
through
facilitated interactions with peers.
Individual and family therapy helps to
address more personal issues clients may need to
discuss, and is
important to include in an adolescent treatment
plan.
Our Adolescent Counselor, Allison
Grubbs, MSW, LCSW, LCAS was also a
licensed Visual Arts teacher. Her
counseling approach is strengths-based and
utilizes art therapy techniques to engage
clients in self-expression. Our absolute best
effort is made to reconnect clients to
healthier, more positive ways to contribute,
communicate, and cope.
