Level Three: Longer-Term Intermediate Treatment Program

As the result of your substance abuse assessment, you could be referred to an Intermediate-term Substance Abuse Treatment Program. You would be placed in this program in accordance with guidelines issued by the N.C. Department of Human Resources, which regulates substance abuse and DWI assessments and treatment.

This program consists of a Program Orientation and fifteen 2 3/4 -hour sessions and an individual closing session, spread out over at least 60 days . Individual counseling sessions may also be recommended.

These groups meet on Six Forks Road in Raleigh on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:15 PM in Raleigh. There is also a Saturday session that meets from 9:00 AM until 11:45 AM.

Durham groups meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Garner groups also meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6:00 - 9:00 PM.

NC DWI law states DWI clients must complete the required number of hours in no less than 60 days. Other clients are generally recommended to complete in a similar amount of time. However, all recommendations are determined by the counselor and staff at the time of the assessment, if all the information is available.

If money is tight at this time, you can work out a payment plan and get your treatment hours out of the way. Payment can be made by check, cash, credit card or money order.

If paying at group time, please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to process payment. All fees must be paid before your completion notice is sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles .

Level 4: Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program

Many studies show that Intensive Outpatient Treatment spread out over at least 90 days and follow-up afterwards is the most success form of substance abuse treatment. It may be more successful for long-term success than inpatient or residential treatment.

90-hour Program, completed in no less than 90 days. Groups meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at our Six Forks Road location.  IOP meets in Durham and Garner on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6 - 9:00 PM. Call for more information.

All groups include participants who come to First Step for a variety of reasons, not only DWI. Groups include people referred by families, self-referrals, hospitals, DWI, job/employers, attorneys, probation officers, colleges and universities, high schools, other agencies similar to First Step and many other referral sources.

Insurance usually pays the majority of the cost of Intensive Outpatient Treatment.
